Ulcerative Proctitis and Pregnancy
Ulcerative proctitis, which is an inflammation of the lining of the rectum, may lead to complications during pregnancy. A fistula is a fusing of an organ or intestine to another structure within the body. Ulcerative proctitis sufferers often experience anal fistulas. Pregnant sufferers may also develop cervical, enterovaginal, metroperitoneal, or umbilical fistulas. Treatment usually requires a surgical procedure to remove the fistula known as a fistulotomy. In pregnant patients this is often more difficult to accomplish.
