Supplements for Mental Health
Supplements can include vitamins, minerals, animal and plant products. Supplements are sometimes used to improve brain function and as treatment for conditions such as: dementia, anxiety, insomnia, depression, bipolar disorder, psychosis, movement disorders, and addictions. Although herbal supplements have been used to improve mental health for many years, there is little scientific evidence that they are helpful. Vitamin supplements are useful for those found to be deficient in certain vitamins, but excessive amounts are typically not helpful and can be dangerous.
- Ginkgo, ginseng, hydergine, sage, and vitamin E are thought to be helpful in improving brain function and dementia.
- Valerian, passion flower, chamomile, lemon balm, and lavender are thought to improve anxiety and sleep problems.
- St. John's wort, folic acid, selenium, and omega-3 fatty acids are sometimes used to treat depression and bipolar disorder.
