Pseudoephedrine Laws

The sale of the pseudoephedrine is highly monitored by the United States Drug Enforcement Administration. Pseudoephedrine is commonly used in the manufacture of methamphetamine. The sale of pseudoephedrine is limited to less than 3.6 grams daily, or less than 9 grams total within a 30 day period.

  • 37 states have enacted laws (in addition to the federal law) regulating the sale of pseudoephedrine.
  • Any medication containing pseudoephedrine must be sold behind the counter, and a log-book listing sales must contain the product sold, quantity sold, date, time, and the name and address of the purchaser.
  • Buyers of pseudoephedrine must present a photo identification issued by the state or federal government and enter information into the required logbook with their signature.
