Normal Urination Frequency
Normal urination frequency can vary for each individual. Age, gender, fluid intake, fluid type, and medications can affect an individual's urinary output. The bladder can hold up to 16 ounces (2 cups) of fluid for 2 to 5 hours if the urinary system is healthy. On the average, an individual may urinate 6 to 7 times in a 24 hour period.
- A study showed a majority of men urinated less than 12 times a day, averaging 7 times daily. The majority of women urinated less than 13 times a day, averaging 8 times daily.
- Aging, illness, and injury are the most common problems associated with urination frequency.
- Urinary tract infection (UTI) is the most common condition that causes frequent urination.
