NSAIDs are not recommended during pregnancy unless the benefits to the mother clearly outweigh the risk to the developing fetus. NSAIDs are classified as pregnancy category C drugs by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and not recommended at all during the third trimester of pregnancy. NSAID use in the first trimester increases the risk of congenital defects, particularly heart defects.
