Lantus (insulin glargine), a long-acting form of insulin, can be used in the sliding scale system for optimal blood glucose control in diabetes. Long-acting insulin (such as Lantus), given once or twice a day, provides a level background of insulin throughout the day and can often be supplemented by short-acting bolus insulin injections that are based upon the pre-set carbohydrate count and the blood glucose measurement prior to meals.
