Using a glucometer allows you to have quick access to your blood sugar levels. Your blood sugar levels should be monitored a few times a day when you have diabetes. Keeping track of these readings can help your health care provider determine if your treatment needs to be modified.
- Always wash your hands before using a glucometer to prevent infection. Prepare the area for testing with an alcohol prep pad and wait until the alcohol evaporates.
- Use a lancet to pierce the skin, most will have you take the blood from your finger. There are newer models that allow you to be able to take it from other places.
- Place blood onto the test strip, then the glucose monitor will take a few moments to give you your blood sugar results. Keep a record of these results.
