How to Take a Sitz Bath

A sitz bath is when a person sits in only a few inches of water. The water should cover the buttocks and hip area. Sitz baths are used for a variety of reasons such as easing painful hemorrhoids, painful ovaries, infections in the prostate, cramping, bladder infections and itching in the anal area.

  • Use three to four inches of water.
  • Sit in the sitz bath for 20 minutes.
  • Sitz baths use warm or cool water.
  • May feel dizzy or experience rapid heat beat due to blood vessels dilating.
